North Carolina will get a $17.6 million share from a $391.5 million multi-state settlement with Google over its locating tracking practices.

Attorney General Josh Stein said in a news release that he was part of the executive committee of AGs who investigated the internet giant and negotiated the settlement, which he says is “the largest multi-state attorney general privacy settlement in U.S. history.”

The AGs say Google violated consumer protection laws by confusing users about whether they’d disabled location tracking on their phones. The settlement requires Google to offer more transparency to ensure users understand when and how they can enable or disable location sharing.

“People should have the ability to decide how much of their information they want to share with tech companies,” Stein said in a news release. “Google took that ability away from people unlawfully and gained access to North Carolinians’ personal data and location information."
